Gavin Vander Wall, 3, of Byron Center, was born with Down syndrome and severe heart defects. Gavin spent most of his first year in and out of hospitals for five heart surgeries. In April of 2007, Gavin suffered a stroke that left him unable to talk, walk, and hold his head up on his own. His mother, Alicia Vander Wall, 38, has kept a blog as a both way of giving Gavin a voice in the world and to show her readers the joy, even through the struggles, that a boy with Down syndrome brings.

Gavin and Alicia Vander Wall play while his mom goes through his daily treatments on Saturday, April 10, 2010 . Gavin has Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease, or COPD, which causes his lungs to make extra mucus. Alicia Vander Wall uses this suction cup to break up the mucus that collects in his lungs to make it easier for him to breathe.

It makes me so happy to see them WANT to be with him and WANT to play with him! They truly enjoy having him as their brother, even though he can't do a whole lot or get up and play with them.”

Broken light

Okay, my February 10th resolution is to update this blog more, even if it's not with portrait photography. Last night after walking back from class I opened the door to my hall and one of the lights was tied to the ceiling with caution tape. Interesting light+bright yellow caution tape+inspiration from my photography class+finally understanding how my digital SLR works=Katie standing on a chair in the middle of the hall with a camera.
I love my camera--not only does it take beautiful pictures, it gives me an excuse to do stupid things. Example: Why is that girl laying on the ground? Oh, she has a camera, she must be getting some really great angle on something.

At least, that's what I hope people thing when they see me twisting my body awkwardly and standing on things I probably shouldn't stand on.

Class of 2010::Matt and Nick

This Saturday I went downtown with Matt, Nick, and Nick's mom Lynn. Here's some pictures for you to preview, guys!

I've known Matt since elementary school--it was crazy taking his senior pictures! He's all grown up.

This shot is probably my favorite from all of them. The guys had fun showing off their soccer tricks and it was fun getting some action shots--not used to that in a senior picture photoshoot.

Nick's pictures are going to be fun to edit. Two days before the photoshoot, he got kicked in the nose and had to get stitches. Thank goodness for photoshop!

It was great hanging out Saturday morning. Hope you guys enjoyed your preview.

I took this picture back in July but never had a chance to edit it.

Now that work has slowed up a bit I can go back to more artistic photography.

Families :: The Charles

Last week Thursday Raenu, Nithya, Rupa, their mother Anita, and I went my favorite park to take portraits of the girls. I've spent my whole summer with these girls and we've had some good times, but that night was probably one of the best. While they didn't want to pose too much, we did get some beautiful shots (which isn't hard with girls that are as pretty as they are!)

We also took some pictures in their backyard since the sun started to set too early for me to get all the shots I wanted.

Thanks for letting me take your pictures, girls--and don't be surprised if I pull my camera out more this week then I have in the past. It's our last week together this summer, but I'm sure I'll be seeing you around, especially since we live to close to each other.
